Often when you are on the phone, it is helpful to have a timer to ensure that you keep your toll calls to a minimum or even just to keep yourself on schedule. JPT makes this a snap. To view the call timer settings, click on the timer button in the main window (it looks like a clock). This will open a drawer off of the main window with options for setting some basic call timer parameters. First, you need to enter a duration between alerts. The duration is in minutes but you may use fractional numbers to indicate seconds. For instance, to see an alert every 15 seconds, enter a duration of 0.25 minutes in the “Call Timer Displays an Alert Every X Minutes” field. If you would like an audible beep along with the onscreen alert, make sure to check the “Beep on Alert” option (and be sure your system isn’t muted). Now, to start your timer, either click the “Start” button or choose “Start Timer” from the JPT menu in the menu bar. Once a timer is started, you will be alerted at the specified intervals of the length of time since the timer was started. During each alert you have the option to cancel it or you can cancel the timer between alerts by clicking the “Stop” button or by selecting “Stop Timer” from the JPT menu. You may also automatically start a timer as soon as you dial by enabling the appropriate option in the call timer drawer and you can start and stop call timers (as well as set the call timer parameters) from AppleScript.

For most calls, you will want to reset the timer each time it starts. However, if you are trying to track the total time you spend on the phone (for instance, if you are tracking your time to bill back to a specific project), you can disable the option to “Reset Timer on Start”. By disabling this option, the timer will be cumulative and start where it left off the last time the timer was run (regardless of this setting, the time is reset to 0:00 on launch so you may want to note the cumulative time before quitting JPT).
